The DoorDumb Method
Frameless tint needs the glass locked up for shrink and edge work. DoorDumb sits between that glass and the trim so an accidental door close hits the tool — not the window.
The problem in one line:
Window stays fully up (required for film). Someone closes the door. Trim compresses into the glass edge. Crack. Callback. Bad day.
01 · Raise
Lock the glass up
Raise the window to the working position — usually fully up / “locked up.” Heat shrink, edge alignment, and full-surface film work need the glass seated high. You cannot finish a clean frameless install with the glass dropped into the door.
02 · Seat
Place DoorDumb
Insert DoorDumb between the glass edge and the interior trim. Confirm it is seated and stable. The tool creates a controlled gap — a mechanical buffer — in the exact zone where a closed door would crush trim into glass.
03 · Protect
Tint and shrink as usual
Heat-shrink film, set edges, squeegee, and finish. If a coworker, customer, or you bump the door shut, DoorDumb takes the compression instead of the glass edge or trim clips. Work continues. Glass stays intact.
04 · Finish
Remove when clear
When the window is ready to lower and the install step is done, remove DoorDumb. It is a preventative bay tool — treat it like cleaning glass or cutting film: every frameless door, every time.
Why locked-up glass gets broken
On frameless and semi-frameless doors there is no full frame around the glass. When the window is up and the door closes, interior trim and seals drive straight into the glass edge. That edge takes the load. One slam can crack tempered glass, bend trim, break clips, stop the job, and turn a tint ticket into a glass replacement conversation.
Installers keep the glass locked up on purpose: shrink needs the film on a raised, accessible surface, and edge work needs the top of the glass where it belongs. Lowering the window mid-job is not a safe workaround — it kills the install quality. Protection has to live with the locked-up window, not instead of it.
How DoorDumb redirects the force
- Without DoorDumb: door close → trim compresses → load into glass edge → crack or trim failure.
- With DoorDumb: door close → spacer takes the hit → glass and trim stay clear of that crush zone.
Door closes. Pressure happens. DoorDumb takes the hit instead of the glass.
Bay checklist
- Raise glass to full working / locked-up height before shrink or edge work
- Seat DoorDumb fully between glass edge and trim — confirm it will not fall out
- Brief anyone near the bay: door can still move; the tool is the failsafe
- Do not treat DoorDumb as a door stop for walking through — it is a glass/trim crush protector
- Remove only when that window step is finished and the glass can safely lower
